In the Footprints of Londoners

WAPPING

Wapping is one of East London's most atmospheric riverside areas.

Wapping is an impressive mix of modern developments and historic buildings.

Wapping is an area within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets which forms part of the Docklands to the east of the City of London. It is situated in the "East End" between the north bank of the River Thames and the ancient thoroughfare simply known as The Highway.

Due to the close proximity to the river Thames, Wapping has a strong maritime character. It has some of the best historic riverside pubs in London, such as the Prospect of Whitby.

During the Blitz the London Docks were a target and so the East End was severely damaged with many of the original buildings in Wapping demolished. The London Docklands declined after the World War II and the area became run down, with huge warehouses being abandoned and left empty.

It was during the 1980s  that the area's fortunes transformed and the neglected warehouses began to be converted into luxury flats.
